Fredericksburg, VA 22401

FREE ADMISSION!

Friday June 22nd, 2012 @ 9:00am to 9:00pm
Saturday June 23rd, 2012 @ 9:00am to 4:30pm

This conference is for everyone, not just homeschooling families. All religious are especially welcome.
We love children, but must restrict attendance to teens and nursing babies only.

We want to thank everyone who came to our 10th Annual Conference this past June at the Hilton Hotel. We had about 1,425 attendees over the course of two days, and even though that number was down about 200 from the year before, there was a great atmosphere and much excitement. Based on the surveys submitted at the conference and a telephone survey conducted shortly thereafter, we realized that the layout of the Hilton was somewhat confusing and inconvenient. Clearly having our vendors in many different rooms was not the ideal situation.

After conducting a thorough search of facilities in the Washington D.C./Northern Virginia area, we decided that the Fredericksburg Expo and Conference Center in Fredericksburg, VA (about an hour South of our previous location and right off of I-95) would make an excellent new home for our conference. This facility has one huge open space for all of our vendors to be together (as they had been at the Dulles Expo Center), and it also has separate speaking rooms which are both beautiful and spacious enough to accommodate all of our attendees comfortably. HERE are some photos of the new facility. There is ample parking at this venue, which was apparently a problem for some attendees at our previous location.

In addition to relocating the conference to a different venue, we have also changed our weekend. Instead of scheduling our event on the second weekend in June, we will be moving to the fourth weekend in June, which is June 22 and 23, 2012. Shifting weekends has two main benefits; first, we will no longer be on the same weekend as the priestly ordinations for the Diocese of Arlington, which in the past has prevented us from getting some great local speakers, and second, we will no longer be on the same weekend as the HEAV homeschooling conference in Richmond, VA. We hope that you will all be able to join us in Fredericksburg for our 11th Annual Conference! God bless you and your family!

Msgr. Charles Pope was born July 10, 1961, in Chicago, Illinois to Charles and Nancy Pope. He and his family moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1972. Msgr. Pope’s interest in the priesthood stems from his experience as a church musician. Through his college years he served as a church organist, a cantor and choir director and through this work discovered his vocation to the priesthood. He entered Mt. Saint Mary’s Seminary in 1985 where he earned a Master of Divinity Degree as well as a Master of Arts Degree in Moral Theology. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1989 by James Cardinal Hickey.

Pope served as Associate Pastor of Holy Comforter St. Cyprian Parish in Southeast Washington, D.C. From 1999-2000 he was Associate Pastor at St. Mary’s Parish in Laurel, MD. In April of 2000 Fr. He received a BA in Architecture from Virginia Tech in 1987 and worked as an architect in Charlotte, North Carolina until 1994 when he entered seminary formation for the Diocese of Arlington, VA. After receiving his M. Div. & M.A. in theology from Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD, Fr. Bashista was ordained to the priesthood on May 15, 1999. His first assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Mary of Sorrows Church in Fairfax, VA.

Fr. Shenan Boquet, before recently being appointed as President of Human Life International, came from the Houma Thibodaux Roman Catholic Diocese, where he most recently served as Pastor of St. Gregory Barbarigo Parish in Houma, Louisiana.

Since being ordained as a priest in 1993, Fr. Boquet has given hundreds of talks at conferences and in parishes on issues ranging from the dignity of the human person and the nature of marriage, to social justice and moral theology. He has given retreats and educational seminars on the Theology of the Body, Holy Scripture and various theological topics. Fr. Boquet has also appeared numerous times on EWTN and Ave Maria Radio, as well as in other media. He has served and continues to serve on numerous boards, including the Diocesan Priests Council, of which he remains Chairman.

Fr. Boquet grew up in the small town of Bourg, Louisiana, just south of Houma in a devoutly Catholic family, for which he is extremely grateful. His earliest and most influential examples were of his parents and parish priests, all of whom instilled in him at a young age a love for Christ and his Church, and an active faith that was to be lived, and not merely held. He was very active as a youth in service projects with Catholic Charities and with other groups who ministered to the elderly, the sick, the poor and marginalized.

This active faith grew naturally into a vocation to the priesthood, where the contemplative and sacramental aspects of the Faith complemented and informed the active. A natural teacher, Fr. Boquet has been marginalized himself at times for sharing the Church’s teaching on life and family issues, although he emphasizes that it is important to do so with Charity. Throughout his priesthood, he has found himself in leadership positions, and increasingly in the areas of pro-life and pro-family teaching and advocacy.
Fr. Shannon Michael Collins was born in 1964 and is a native of Cohasset, MA. After undergraduate and graduate work in history and education, he taught in Catholic schools for a number of years. Having completed his seminary training at St. Philip Neri Seminary in Toronto, Ontario, he was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 2000.

Father has been a very strong proponent of Catholic homeschooling and, over the years, a very popular speaker at numerous Catholic homeschooling conferences across the United States. He has appeared on EWTN and had previously served as chaplain for the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament of Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama. Father is currently a traditional religious priest under Bishop Roger Foys of Covington, Kentucky.
Fr. Sean Kopczynski is currently a traditional religious priest under Bishop Roger Foys of Covington, Kentucky, and had previously served as a chaplain to a monastery of Carmelite nuns.
Fr. Stephen McGraw was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in McLean, Virginia. After graduating as a history major from Christendom College in 1984, he attended law school at the University of Virginia. From 1991 to 1997, he practiced constitutional law as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. He entered Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1997 and was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, on June 9, 2001.

He is currently Parochial Vicar at Holy Family Catholic Church in Dale City, Va.
Fr. Frank E. Papa, S.O.L.T., J.C.D. spent more than 25 years working with youth before his ordination to the priesthood in 1989. He was Founder and Executive Director of Teens, Incorporated, a recreational character-building organization that expanded into Teen Homes for youth from broken homes.

He earned his Doctorate in Canon Law from the Angelicum in Rome, graduated Magna Cum Laude, studied for an Advocacy Degree at the Sacred Roman Rota, and taught various courses at the Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, CT. He has been a guest on radio and television shows, and a speaker at state agencies and institutions, as well as at regional and national home schooling conferences.

As a priest with extensive backgrounds in Canon Law, marriage preparation, and youth work, Fr. Papa is uniquely qualified to give parents important tips from a Catholic perspective. Recently, he authored the book, Love, Dating, and Marriage: A Marriage Preparation Guide.
Fr. Peter West earned an M.A. degree in theology from Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, CT and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark in 1991. Father West is the founder and director of Amicus, a successful Catholic young adult group for men and women in their twenties and thirties. He also has experience in working with youth as a teacher and a youth group leader. In his pastoral ministry he has preached frequently on the topic of abortion and other life issues. He has been able to dissuade women from having abortions, and has helped women who have had abortions to find healing and peace.

He spent almost seven years in pastoral ministry before being released by Archbishop Theodore McCarrick to serve with Priests for Life, where he served from April 1998 until accepting the position of Vice President for Mission for HLI. In his over 25 years of pro-life advocacy, he has spoken to both priests and laity at over 500 events, including presentations in all 50 states and in several nations worldwide. He has also appeared on radio and TV spreading the Gospel of Life.
Sr. Mary Joseph Heisler was born the second eldest, and the only girl, in a family of 6 children, the eldest of whom is now a priest. When she was a girl, she made a pilgrimage to Fatima and soon after realized her vocation was clearly “Carmelite, but not cloistered.” After graduating valedictorian of her high school class, she entered the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus in St. Louis, MO on September 8, 1984.

Upon profession of her temporary vows, she served the elderly as a certified nurse assistant for four years until she professed final vows in 1992. She then taught pre-kindergarten for several years before becoming the director of the Carmelite Child Development Center and vocation director for the province. In March of 2001, she was transferred to the Motherhouse in Sittard, Netherlands where she began a youth ministry program as part of her vocation work there. In December of 2002, she was transferred back to St. Louis, where she was named novice mistress until her appointment as provincial superior in August 2003.

Prof. Joseph Pearce is a world-recognized biographer of modern Christian literary figures. He is the internationally acclaimed author of 14 books, which include bestsellers such as G.K. Chesterton: Wisdom and Innocence (Ignatius, 1997), Literary Converts (Ignatius, 2000), Tolkien: Man and Myth (Ignatius, 2001), Solzhenitsyn: A Soul in Exile (Baker Books, 2001), Bilbo’s Journey, and Old Thunder: A Life of Hilaire Belloc (Ignatius, 2002). Pearce’s books have been published and translated into over eight languages.

Mr. Pearce converted to the Catholic faith in 1989 as a result of “becoming friends” with several 20th-century literary figures he researched who had been Christians and, ultimately, converts to Catholicism—particularly G.K. Chesterton. As a younger man, Pearce was “extremely anti-Catholic” and even had opposed Pope John Paul II’s visits to England. His earlier viewpoint gradually shifted as he learned more about the writings and beliefs of the literary converts he would eventually profile.

As Writer in Residence and professor of literature at Ave Maria University in Naples, Florida, since September 2001, Mr. Pearce also serves as Editor of the Saint Austin Review, a trans-Atlantic monthly cultural review. A native of Great Britain, he relocated to the United States in 2001 to serve at Ave Maria University. He is also contributing writer to a number of newspapers and magazines in the United Kingdom, U.S. and Canada.

An accomplished tutor, teacher and speaker, Mr. Pearce has participated and lectured at a wide variety of international and literary events at major colleges and universities in the U.S., Britain, Europe and Canada. He is also a regular guest on national and international television and radio programs, and has served as consultant for film documentaries on J.R.R. Tolkien and Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

He is the author of Epic: A Journey through Church History, and The Early Church: An Epic Journey Through Church History Time Period Study. He served as the Director of the Office of Marriage and Family Life for the Archdiocese of Denver (2001 – 2004) and was a theological advisor to Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap. He teaches marriage preparation classes in the Diocese of Arlington. His interests include the Crusades and the Reformation.

Mrs. Laraine Bennett has a Master’s Degree in Philosophy and is a freelance writer for many Catholic publications, including Catholic Match and the Catholic News Agency’s Catholic Womanhood Blog. She also designed an online temperament test for Catholic Match that has been taken by more than 60,000 singles.

Together with her husband, Art, she has co-authored three books on temperament: The Temperament God Gave You, The Temperament God Gave Your Spouse, and The Temperament God Gave Your Kids, as well as a book on emotions, The Emotions God Gave You. They have lived in California and in Germany and currently live in Northern Virginia where they are parishioners at Holy Trinity Parish in Gainesville. The Bennetts have four children—one of each temperament type! They homeschooled for ten years, and have done many talks to local homeschool groups.
Mrs. Colleen Billing is a homeschooling mother of five children and has been married to her husband Andrew for almost 20 years. She graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with a bachelor of arts in public speaking and a minor in teaching English.

Colleen runs a professional organizing business called Peaceful Interiors, and works part-time at a personal training studio near her home in Westmont, Illinois. She has a passion for helping women (and men!) embrace a simpler, clutter-free life, and believes that a peaceful, beautiful home and a strong, healthy body are part of God’s plan for each of us.

She has been a retreat master and a guest speaker at various homeschooling “home management” meetings, and both she and her husband are permanently professed members of The Brothers and Sisters of Charity.
Mr. John Clark was homeschooled by his mother, Dr. Mary Kay Clark, for seven years in the 1980’s. He earned a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Christendom College in 1992. He is now a devoted father of nine children, for whom he takes an active role in their homeschool education. He writes one of the most popular Catholic homeschooling columns in America and has spoken at numerous Catholic conferences around the country on the topic of the father’s role in the homeschooling family.

Who’s Got You? Observations of a Catholic Homeschooling Father, John’s first book, was released in 2011. In it, he draws from both his childhood memories of homeschooling in a house with 6 brothers as well as his experience teaching his own children. Filled with both humorous anecdotes of family life and poignant reflections from the heart of a loving father, this book is an enjoyable and helpful guide for homeschooling fathers, as well as anyone who wants to see a portrait of a happy, faithful Catholic family.

In his professional life, John is recognized as one of the foremost experts on the topic of Catholic morality and financial markets. He has been a pioneer in the field of morally responsible investing and was the CEO of Paladin Financial Group for over 15 years. In that capacity, his articles have appeared in such journals as Homiletic and Pastoral Review, The Wanderer, and Latin Mass Magazine. He resides in Front Royal, Virginia, with his wife Lisa and nine children. An avid baseball enthusiast, he is also the former head coach of Christendom College’s baseball team.
Mrs. Anne Carroll is the founder and director of Seton School in Manassas, VA, where she has been developing and teaching authentically Catholic curriculum at the junior and senior high school levels since 1975, the year Elizabeth Ann Seton was canonized. Mrs. Carroll is also founder of Seton Home Study School in Front Royal, VA.

Holding an M.A. in English and an honorary doctorate in Humanities, Mrs. Carroll has taught many subjects over the years and has a special love for history. She authored Christ the King: Lord of History and Christ and the Americas.

In 1988, she received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study the fall of China to Communism. In 2005, she was selected to be one of 20 principals in the D.C. area to participate in the Washington Post Principals’ Leadership Institute. Her husband, Dr. Warren Carroll, noted Catholic historian and founder of Christendom College, passed away in 2011.
Mrs. Regina Doman grew up surrounded by nine younger brothers and sisters. “Growing up,” she says, “There were two things I was always convinced of: that I was meant to be married, and that I was meant to write stories.” She attended the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio and graduated with a BA in Communications, concentrating on Television Production, with a minor in Theatre Arts.

From 1992-1994, Regina lived in New York City, working as assistant editor of Lay Witness magazine and writing columns and articles for various publications, including a comic strip for YOU! Magazine. In 1994, she married her husband, Andrew. She published her first novel for teenagers in 1997. Snow White and Rose Red: A Modern Fairy Tale (re-published in 2002 under the title The Shadow of the Bear) quickly enjoyed success, especially among homeschooled teens, as did the sequel, Black as Night.

In July 2006, Regina’s family was grieved by the loss of her son Joshua in a tragic car accident. They created a memorial website for him and Regina took a sabbatical from public speaking and writing to be with her family. In August 2007 she resumed public work with the release of her third novel, Waking Rose.

Regina and her husband co-own Chesterton Press, and make their home near Front Royal, Virginia, where they homeschool their children. Her latest book is Catholic Philosopher Chick Makes Her Debut, a fun beach read for Catholic moms and college students.
Mr. Andrew Pudewa is the founder, principal speaker, and director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing. Presenting throughout North America, he addresses issues relating to teaching, writing, thinking, spelling, and music with clarity, insight, practical experience, and humor. His seminars for parents, students, and teachers have helped transform many a reluctant writer and have equipped educators with powerful tools to dramatically improve students’ skills.

Although he is a graduate of the Talent Education Institute in Japan (Suzuki Method) and holds a Certificate of Child Brain Development, his best endorsement is from a young Alaskan boy who called him “the funny man with the wonderful words.” He and his beautiful, heroic wife Robin are parents of seven, grandparents of three, and educators of their two youngest children at home in Oklahoma’s Green Country.
Mrs. Virginia (Ginny) Seuffert, a native New Yorker and mother of 12, has been homeschooling for over 20 years! While in New York, Mrs. Seuffert lectured, debated, and wrote a number of articles for the Pro-Life movement. After moving to Illinois, she became a founding member of the Network of Illinois Catholic Home Educators, helped establish the “Round Table” (a Catholic home school leadership discussion group), and became a founder and officer of the Catholic Home School Network of America.

In addition to appearing on EWTN, she has been a guest on numerous radio shows, lectured at Catholic family conferences all over the United States and Canada, and has authored several articles on such topics as home education, teaching children the virtues, and household management. The Illinois Press Association awarded her first place honors for a column she wrote defending traditional family values in a local newspaper. The Seton Home Study School Newsletter regularly features her columns, and recently Seton Press published her first two books of a series, Ginny’s Gems: Home Management Essentials and Ginny’s Gems: 10 Essentials for Teaching Your Preschooler at Home.
